The 2013 vintage brought great conditions for growing our Syrah. In general, winter in 2012 was dry and cold in Apalta, except in june which showed higher temperatures and was also humid (+2ºC versus the last 10 years average). The springtime rains where normal in average. All rains where concentrated in October. Summer was colder and more humid than the historic data. During December, rains of 68.1 mm at Apalta made it the wettest December known in Lapostolle’s history. These rains supplied our water reserves and allowed the grapevines to develop without the necessity of extra summer irrigation.  The ripening process occurred slowly but, it was very balanced.

About the Vineyard

This wine comes exactly from San José de Apalta Vineyard, which is located few kilometers West from our main vineyard in Apalta. The Vineyard is situated on an Easter exposure. The Tinguiririca river rests on one side and the slopes from the Coastal Cordillera support the parcels of Syrah on its east exposure. This creek's geography is responsible for the conditions that ensure balance and silky texture for our Syrah from San José de Apalta. At sunrise and sunset, the Cordillera block the sun’s rays, limiting the vines exposure to intense sunshine and the river has a cooling influence on the climate.

Wine Production

Our Cuvée Alexandre Syrah from Apalta is the very first edition of this wine made from grapes of highest quality we have in our vineyards, so all the process was carried out following the highest standards we do reach at Lapostolle. To reduce the cooling necessity at the winery we hand harvested all the grapes at night in small plastic cases of 14 kilos and sent them to the winery. We carefully selected the best fruit, 89% went through the optical selection of Vistalys and 11% was hand destemmed at Clos Apalta Winery, obtaining this way prefect results. Then fermentation occurred with wild yeast in wooden vats. During the process we manually punched down the cap to increase skin contact. Malolactic fermentation was made in barrels.
