Yalumba Old Bushvine Grenache 2017
Yalumba
The Samuel’s Garden collection of wines embodies the fabric of the Barossa region, with the gentle fingerprint of Yalumba. Having intimate knowledge of our land, we have trialled and successfully proven that many varieties make a natural home in the Barossa
About the Vineyard
A moderate winter led to a warm and dry spring, which resulted in a sedate and healthy start to the growing season. This moderate weather continued into summer until the end of January, when approximately 25mm of rain fell throughout the Barossa. The rain was welcomed and gave the vines a much needed drink to finish off ripening the grapes. The warm days during summer and autumn were mediated by cool nights leading to great acid retention and pristine fruit flavours being exhibited by our Grenache.
Wine Production
All parcels of Old Bush Vine Grenache are crushed separately, this allows blending options to be maximised. The majority of parcels were fully destemmed, however for some parcels the stems are left on to contribute another flavour dimension. Fermentation is initiated by wild yeasts naturally present on the grapes from the vineyard, cultured winery yeasts are then added to finish off the process. Post fermentation particular parcels are left on skins for two to three months, this extended maturation helps to contribute greater complexity and individuality to the wine.
Tasting Notes
Vibrant and elegant Grenache, the old bush vines really display their class in the 2016 vintage. The wine is fragrant, fresh and full of red cherries, raspberries and crunchy pomegranates. Savoury characters evolve into spices and dried herbs. A concise yet fleshy palate with rich red fruits weaving through a juicy, mouth-watering mid palate, with elegant tannins and fresh acidity to finish. Drink now or cellar through to 2025.
Food Pairing
Enjoy with charred mushroom and cashew pizza or a tea smoked duck with maple glaze.
